Of the five vessels Drake led to the bottom of the world, two were intentionally scuttled, the third sunk in a storm after exiting the Strait of Magellan, and the fourth turned back after becoming separated from the fleet. It was only after they bypassed the Mediterranean that their commander announced his true intentions to round the southern tip of South America and enter the Pacific Ocean-a feat never before accomplished by an English vessel.
